Statement

This body of work explores the relationship between figure and objectivity through the depiction of pattern. First working purely representationally, I studied how the essence of pattern - the textile - created movement though a still life. Then, I experimented with introducing figure into this relationship of formal movement and pattern, using the feminine associations of pattern to divert the inherent objectivity of the female nude onto its decoration, rather than a sexualized body. Using this idea of textile's attachment to the female figure, and in turn textile's ability to evoke sexuality, I strove to push the limits of pictorial depth perception, color, and detail to create a different and less intimate environment in which the subject and object could be questioned openly.
